New Dungeness Lighthouse 1857 |
|
Since 1857 the New Dungeness lighthouse has marked the east end of Dungeness Spit, northwest of Sequim. Designed in a Cape Cod style, its 1 1/2 story dwelling with 92 foot tower displayed a fixed-white light through its third-order lens. Cracks developed in the tower by 1927 and 30 feet of the upper tower was removed. The lens was replaced with a forth-order lens. In 1976 the light was replaced with a modern optic lens and automated. The lighthouse (which was the last Coast Guard manned lighthouse on the West Coast) is leased by the New Dungeness Chapter of the US Lighthouse Society. A 5 mile hike to the lighthouse begins in the Dungeness Wildlife Refuge..... Below left, views south along Dungeness Spit. Below right, looking north.
